25 Organizations: Victoria Nuland’s Nomination Should Be Rejected

By World BEYOND War, January 11, 2021

Victoria Nuland, former foreign policy adviser to vice president Dick Cheney, should not be nominated for Undersecretary of State, and if nominated should be rejected by the Senate.

Nuland played a key role in facilitating a coup in Ukraine that created a civil war costing 10,000 lives and displacing over a million people. She played a key role in arming Ukraine as well. She advocates radically increased military spending, NATO expansion, hostility toward Russia, and efforts to overthrow the Russian government.

The United States invested $5 billion in shaping Ukrainian politics, including overthrowing a democratically elected president who had refused to join NATO. Then-Assistant Secretary of State Nuland is on video talking about the U.S. investment and on audiotape planning to install Ukraine’s next leader, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, who was subsequently installed.

The Maidan protests, at which Nuland handed out cookies to protesters, were violently escalated by neo-Nazis and by snipers who opened fire on police. When Poland, Germany, and France negotiated a deal for the Maidan demands and an early election, neo-Nazis instead attacked the government and took over. The U.S. State Department immediately recognized the coup government, and Arseniy Yatsenyuk was installed as Prime Minister.

Nuland has worked with the openly pro-Nazi Svoboda Party in Ukraine. She was long a leading proponent of arming Ukraine. She was also an advocate for removing from office the prosecutor general of Ukraine, whom then-Vice President Joe Biden pushed the president to remove.

Nuland wrote this past year that “The challenge for the United States in 2021 will be to lead the democracies of the world in crafting a more effective approach to Russia—one that builds on their strengths and puts stress on Putin where he is vulnerable, including among his own citizens.”

She added: “…Moscow should also see that Washington and its allies are taking concrete steps to shore up their security and raise the cost of Russian confrontation and militarization. That includes maintaining robust defense budgets, continuing to modernize U.S. and allied nuclear weapons systems, and deploying new conventional missiles and missile defenses, . . . establish permanent bases along NATO’s eastern border, and increase the pace and visibility of joint training exercises.”

The United States walked out of the ABM Treaty and later the INF Treaty, began putting missiles into Romania and Poland, expanded NATO to Russia’s border, facilitated a coup in Ukraine, began arming Ukraine, and started holding massive war rehearsal exercises in Eastern Europe. But to read Victoria Nuland’s account, Russia is simply an irrationally evil and aggressive force that must be countered by yet more military spending, bases, and hostility. Some U.S. military officials say this demonizing of Russia is all about weapons profits and bureaucratic power, no more fact-based than the Steele Dossier that was given to the FBI by Victoria Nuland.

  1. Events of last week confirmed that the US now officially has no moral authority over other countries. We need to leverage this moment to enact real change to dismantle our military empire. if you would like another organization to sign on please add MK Gandhi Institute for nonviolence. Thank you for your work

  2. There are many war hawks, including the president-elect in the incoming administration. The appointment of Nuland is another indication of this. It must be opposed, and the post replaced by a known individual who will bring caution and wisdom to foreign policy

  3. I thought it was Biden who nominated Victoria Nuland. Trump is effectively gone. Perhaps examining Biden’s other nominations in his pro intervention cabinet would be more productive

  4. I will contact my Reps and Senators and relate my concerns about Victoria Nuland. Long road to world without war; however, I will keep moving in that direction. Grateful for your information.

  5. Last checked, Nuland, who appointed the leadership of the post-coup Ukrainian war cabinet in advance of the fact, was a Republican. Now the good old days of “bipartisan” global war can resume in good earnest. Look to see her and company resume and escalate the U.S. war in Syria and proxy war in the Donbass. For starters.

  6. Yes, grateful for this information on Nuland, as well as on the details of U.S. intervention in Ukraine. I also remain concerned about Biden’s record of an interventionist and militaristic foreign policy orientation. I certainly worry about his inclination to be confrontational with Russia, which is reinforced by his appointment of Anthony Blinkin.

  7. Nuland stinks, bad choice, Joe. But then you were at the helm
throughout the Maidan CIA fomented coup against a democratically
elected government, so what should we expect? Not to mention your
aggrandizements in the millions — you and Hunter — from Ukrainian
Burisma et al, interest peddling of state actor influence.

  8. I think that if something is really to be changed in the United States, then war criminals and warmongers must no longer come to the political power and their networks and supporters must be dismantled. Victoria Nuland is just a drop in the ocean. But she too must leave!

    Germam :

    1. I can assure you Nuland Mrs Kagan is more than a drop in the bucket. Americas # 1 war family. Sure gets my vote for that .

  9. We should not be interfering in the affairs of other nations and this lady worked for Dick Chaney, who certainly believed in doing
things in other countries for our military and/or economic benefit.

  10. Shame on not mentioning that Nuland is married to Robert Kagan. Which makes her part of America’s #1 family of war.

  11. This woman is a walking, talking disaster. I had hoped with the end of the Bush/Cheney regime, we would hear no more of her. Please don’t let her anywhere the levers of power. She is beyond dangerous, completely immoral and unethical.

  12. Hard to think of a worse pick… How does trouble with Russia help the average American or the American people as a whole?????

  13. This neo-Nazi supporter has no place in a Biden administration. It is time to work for peace and diplomacy — not for war and disruption.

  14. Victoria Nuland’s name seems to pop up quite a bit as our recent history of war profiteering is revealed.
Perhaps , just perhaps, her inclusion is not an accident. Please keep up the pressure on the
President Elect to forego the polices of death and destruction In favor of a more enlightened and reasoned choice.

  15. An appalling choice for any government position, let along foreign policy
    — even without her connection to the odious Dick Cheney.

  16. The likes of Victoria Nuland are unfit to serve a nation that needs much healing, increaseD
domestic investment , and less foreign adventurism. The greatest of challenges to US hegemony are internal inequalities and rising fascism. Wake up Biden, see sense.

  17. And, after 8 years at the right hand of Obama, during his administration, that Biden too is unaware of the damning evidence cited in your article; by still selecting “Coup Plotter Nuland” as his choice “for Deputy Secretary of State for Political Affairs” is beyond belief.
What does it tell us of Biden’s agenda: Nothing but more of the same!
“Obama learned too late!” If Biden learned nothing then, when will he ever learn?

  18. I raised a question about this at my FB timeline: A Medea Benjamin article (linked below) indicates that the most reprehensible, dishonest and contemptble warmonger, Victoria Nuland, is one of Joe Biden’s current crop of nominees (I do not even want to know which federal position; this person is toxic). Is there any campaign you know of which will try to get this nomination aborted? This would be most important.
