Crashing the National Police of Canada’s 150 Year Birthday Celebration

By World BEYOND War, May 23, 2023

On Tuesday May 23rd, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Canada’s national police force, launched their celebration of 150 years of existence. At the same time, World BEYOND War joined a network of scholars, reporters, and researchers brought together through the Abolish C-IRG coalition (more on this here) to launch our own alternative #RCMP150 heritage website with the facts about this police force’s history and present – www.rcmpheritage.ca

The website details the RCMP’s history as a force of military occupation from day one (more on this here), its horrific role in the “war on terror”, its ongoing violent role in the colonization of Indigenous peoples and theft of their land, and much more.

To make absolutely sure that more people see the true history about the RCMP than their own a mythologized commemoration of service to the country, the Toronto Chapter of World BEYOND War joined with allies to plaster thousands of posters across Toronto.

We refuse to celebrate 150 years of militarized and colonial violence, land theft and Indigenous genocide.
