Divest From War Invest For Peace

The tragic end of the Afghanistan war provides ample evidence of the futility and wastes of war. Continuing to pour billions into military solutions instead of real human development and planetary health must be challenged. These four programs offer alternatives and actions we can take to redirect our common wealth for the health and prosperity of people and the planet.

 

The Moral Dimensions of Militarism

There are numerous issues of moral concern with militarism. They go beyond the debate about ‘just wars’ or even how wars are prosecuted, to include the treatment of civilians, the destruction and poisoning of the environment and others. But there are also issues involved with simply preparing for war. Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, co-chair of the national Poor People’s Campaign, will introduce us to thinking more deeply about these concerns and how we might move away from war and build true peace and security.

With Lindsay Koshgarian, Program Director of the National Priorities Project of the Institute for Policy Studies

The National Priorities Project considers itself the “people’s guide to the federal budget.” Lindsay Koshgarian, NPP Program Director, will join us to share new research on the costs of national security since the 9/11 attacks. The figures are sure to grab attention and should help us assess the wisdom of pursuing endless war.

With William Hartung, Director of the Arms and Security Project at the Center for International Policy

William Hartung is director of the Arms and Security Program at the Center for International Policy and a widely recognized expert on military spending and the arms industry. He will share his insights, including new information forthcoming in a report on the aftermath of 9/11. No one knows the system’s inner workings better.

 


Effective Citizen Lobbying to End Militarism

With Elizabeth Beavers, Friends Committee on National Legislation and People Over Pentagon campaign consultant

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 @ 7PM

Elizabeth is an attorney, analyst, and advocate for peace and security. Her commentary on U.S. militarism has been featured in the New York Times, The Guardian, Reuters, CNN, and others. Currently a consultant for the People Over Pentagon coalition, she will share how best to weigh in now to end militarism.
