UPDATE: Graphic as approved by Clear Channel Corporation:

(Here’s a PDF.)

Begining the week of January 22, there will be six billboards going up in California with the image above. This is part of World BEYOND War’s ongoing billboards project, which exists because of the small donations of many people.

This new group of billboards is going up thanks, in particular, to a very generous donation by Ben Cohen.

We are planning events and activities to maximize the impact of the billboards. For more see https://worldbeyondwar.org/oakland

They will be up in these locations:

  1. from Nuclear Ban Treaty Collaborative
Twelve days from now, people around the country will celebrate the entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

TriValley CAREs said their commemoration would include a reading of the Treaty.
At the second Meeting of States Parties, members decided to focus on the lie of deterrence this year. For decades policy makers have declared nuclear weapons necessary to deter enemy attacks, all the while ignoring the humanitarian costs of the nuclear arms race and the global devastation promised by the nuclear weapons should deterrence fail. In fact, deterrence was always a smokescreen, meant to hide the truth about nuclear weapons while nations amassed huge stockpiles in order to project power around the globe. If deterrence ever was a credible policy, that credibility has evaporated as new countries have joined the nuclear club—precisely because they fear the weapons of other nations, exposing the reality that the policy of deterrence has always and inevitably promised proliferation, and with it, ever-increasing peril. The only path to true security is the elimination of nuclear weapons—and the only path to eliminating nuclear weapons is the Ban Treaty!

This year, the Treaty anniversary will be followed smartly—the very next day—by the 2024 Doomsday Clock announcement by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The setting of the hands of the clock always draws media attention, and it dovetails perfectly with the TPNW’s goal of eliminating the threat of nuclear annihilation. So you can double up on your impact by making the connection.

  2. This will be really pleasant to see especially since we’re plagued by offensive, pink billboards by jewbelong.
It seems like the page that people go to should have an action option for people to contact elected officials about this information they’ve seen on the billboard or link.

    1. There is a planning meeting for this project coming up soon… I am waiting to hear back from Flood not Bombs founder and longtime peace activist Keith McHenry, who is planning to speak at this planning event, to tell me when the date has been fixed… either later this month or in February.

  3. I’m so glad that these will go up – several of them in the neighborhood where I live. Can you tell us how long they will be up?

  4. Preaching to the choir.
Put ’em up where the warmongers live and vote. Is that VA? GA? Michigan? I don’t know where most of the support for obscenely huge military funding is, but methinks it’s in the so called RED STATES.
Orange Co, San Diego Co. and San Luis Obispo are hotbeds of military-loving Republicans

I’m being taxed to death, can’t donate just now, but commend the push…keep going! Prime Time TV or bust!
and please stop with the annoying Bots to prove that I’m not a bot. Use Cloudflare if you absolutely must. Enough already.

  7. I’m glad you are doing this. But why all so close together near downtown? Why not in East and West Oakland so more people can see them?
