Stop the Enlargement of the Empire of U.S. Military Bases in Scandinavia

By Veronica Pimenoff, World BEYOND War, April 11, 2024

In December 2023 Denmark, Finland, and Sweden each signed a Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) with the United States. The virtually identical drafts will in due course be submitted to the respective parliaments and the U.S. Senate for ratification. Norway already has an SDCA. Each treaty would considerably infringe upon the sovereignty of the respective host country.

U.S. troops would be allowed to cross all the borders and move freely in all Nordic countries. The U.S. will be able to disperse its bases and their competence according to its interests, surely not according to any security needs of the respective countries which were not experiencing any security threats until now.

Due to DCAs with the three Baltic states and bases in Poland and Germany, U.S. troops will in practice have free movement in the whole area of the Nordic countries, the Baltic sea and the western part of the Arctic.

The Kaliningrad and St Petersburg regions will be the only shores of the Baltic sea not having U.S. military bases. Having the second largest city of Russia squeezed at the bottom of the Gulf of Finland will produce severe tensions in the region. The closeness of the Russian military navy bases in Murmansk in the arctic could cause severe tensions between two nuclear powers.

The northernmost regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia constitute the homeland of the only indigenous people in Europe, the Sami people. Their livelihood would be endangered along with the environment.

When the polar ice is melting, the economic and military importance of the arctic is increasing, when it comes to seafaring, under water resources, and geostrategic issues.

The enlargement of the U.S. Empire of Bases into northern Europe is a threat to peace in the region and in the world. The U.S. is encircling Russia with bases, not an innocuous issue when trying to prevent armed conflicts.

There are campaigns in the Nordic countries aiming at preventing the ratification of the DCAs. They should be supported by campaigns aiming at preventing the U.S. to ratify the treaties. It is in the interest of U.S. citizens and all people in the world to prevent the spreading of U.S. military bases.

Enlarging the Empire of Bases is a dangerous undertaking that should be stopped by the legislative in all countries involved.

We need another kind of geopolitics if we want to guarantee peace, protect the environment and survive.

Note: this petition will be delivered also to the U.S. Senate.

  1. Given the history of fraudulent, disastrous U.S. overseas wars and interventions, the further expansion of NATO is bad for everyone, most certainly for Europe. Too much of the world economy is devoted to militarism. Already, aggressive NATO expansion was a major cause of the war in Ukraine. The CIA was deeply involved and wasn’t able to completely hide its tracks. Senior U.S. diplomats warned that NATO expansion would result in a war. The RAND Corporation’s studies recommended arming Ukraine as the best way to overextend and weaken Russia. The RAND studies predicted a war.

Europe should not prostitute itself to America.
