Pressure Builds on UN to Uphold Court Rulings on Gaza

By World BEYOND War, August 2, 2024

Almost 200,000 emails have been sent to the UN missions of a couple of dozen nations reading “I urge your country to move to convene an emergency session of the UN General Assembly and use Uniting For Peace (Resolution 377) to impose an arms embargo and targeted sanctions on the Israeli government, suspend the Israeli government from the United Nations, and send unarmed peacekeepers to Palestine.” World BEYOND War has partnered on the effort with RootsAction.org.

The emails have gone to the United Nations Consulates of South Africa, Nicaragua, Brazil, Belgium, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Egypt, Honduras, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Turkey, Mexico, Pakistan, Spain, Libya, China, Russia, Algeria, Ecuador, Guyana, Japan, France, Malta, Mozambique, Republic of Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Canada.

The International Court of Justice has ordered Israel to cease its genocidal acts, and the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has requested arrest warrants. And still the United Nations Security Council does not act, and in fact allows its members to provide Israel with the weaponry needed to continue the crime. United Nations General Assembly Resolution 377 (Uniting For Peace) allows the General Assembly to act when the Security Council fails. The General Assembly should NOT escalate the war or deploy armed troops. It should convene an emergency session and use “Uniting For Peace” to impose an arms embargo and targeted sanctions on the Israeli government, suspend the Israeli government from the United Nations, and send to Palestine unarmed peacekeepers (who have repeatedly shown their superiority to armed peacekeepers).

World BEYOND War is working with Code Pink, Veterans For Peace, Fellowship of Reconciliation, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, and others, organizing phone calls, in-person lobby visits at the United Nations in New York, and vigils outside the United Nations in New York that include fasting.

A tentative schedule of upcoming events in New York City follows:

August 10th at 11 a.m. gather with the Yemen vigil at Union Square and then at Maryhouse Catholic Worker located at 55 East Third Street for introductions and planning.

August 11th at 10:15 a.m. join a vigil across from St. Patrick’s cathedral, 631 5th Avenue

August 12th – 15th at 10 a.m. Assemble at the Isaiah Wall at First Avenue and 43rd St. At 11:30 a.m. there will be a single file procession to the U.S. Mission to the UN at First Avenue and 46th St., holding placards and remaining there during the lunch hour. During each weekday, people will fan out to deliver letters to various Missions to the UN.

August 14th at 7 p.m. attend presentation by Rev. Munther Isaac at Riverside Church.

  1. Will be with you. Since October every Thursday (sometimes other days) stand outside our US UN Mission with a big sign “STOP KILLING”
fyi: “Lunch Hour” at the mission generally runs from about 11:30 AM to 2:15 ish… a fair amt of traffic around 2 PM often.
Fyi: to hear Rev. Munster Isaac at Riverside Church on the 14th, Riverside was asking for a donation of $ 12 and to register (find website). This was to cover his costs of travel and stay.

Stand with Iran against the onslaught of propaganda!
and this week, advocate for the TPNW!

See you all soon. Blessings, gratitude, onward together

  2. It is incumbent on the UN to advance the same policies against apartheid Israel as it did against Apartheid South Africa as it has been adjuded by the ICJ to be an apartheid state.
Also, the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide dictates that those that contribute in any way to the crime of genocide must also be brought to justice, while there are others, the three largest contributors to the current, ongoing genocide in Gaza are the US, UK and Germany, charges must be laid against them including individuals in their governments that participate in advancing the genocide.

  3. War is the breakdown of communications, an act of aggression which is unacceptable in this day and age. We are better than that!

  4. We should be role models for future generations by acting now to support a ceasefire, arms embargo and unarmed UN troops as well as expedited humanitarian aid.
Involve Iran in peace building rather than war making

  5. Invasion of a group of people/country and stealing of other countries resources leads to oppression, oppression leads to a justified uprising that leads to what we have now, not just in Gaza and the West Bank. Hegemony of any country needs to end, now!

  6. The citizens of Gaza are hostages just as the remaining Hamas captives are! The slaughter has solved nothing only created more problems that can resonate from generation to generation in revenge. A halt needs to be called, hostage rescue needs to be negotiated with firm timelines by world diplomats. Let’s move on this I beg of you. More innocents trapped in the middle are being born only to starve, be orphaned, be multilated or die.

  8. War seems to be addictive…! Look at Sudan, Bangladesh, what comes next??
Did it all start in Ukraine? What Israel is doing will not only be remembered for many centuries, it will destroy its own country and nobody will be there to help them out when needed.

  9. I TOTALLY agree with Sharon Byers: “It is incumbent on the UN to advance the same policies against apartheid Israel as it did against apartheid South Africa as it has be adjuded by the ICJ to be an apartheid state.
Also, the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide dictates that those who contribute in any way to the crime of genocide must also be brought to justice, while there are others, the three largest contributors to the current, ongoing genocide in Gaza, are the US, UK and Germany, charges must be laid against them including individuals in their governments that participate in advancing genocide.”

  10. STOP THE WAR NOW. THE MURDERING HAS TO STOP
ISRAEL HAS PASSED FROM SANITY TO TOTAL MADNESS

AND THE USA IS FOLLOWING RIGHT BEHIND. NO WAR WITH IRAN, YOU CRAZY FOOLS

  11. Stop the weapons. Weapons are poison for the people, animals and nature. Weapons destroy everything. Stop the war: The government of Israel is full of hate. Netanyahu and his followers are very dangerous. They want no peace. The USA have to stop giving weapons to Israel. GAZA is destroyed and poisonous. The Palestinians can’t live there, but they have no choice. It is degrading.
    The climate is also confused.

  12. it’s time we asserted that the UN actually means something. We cannot allow governments, especially western governments to rip up our only means for human rights protection globally.
