Morocco is going to lead the UN Human Rights Council. But lead it where? Certainly not toward support for human rights, considering what Morocco does in Western Sahara.
Word BEYOND War’s Tim Pluta has a message for the United Nations:
The decision of the United Nations to allow Morocco to lead a department of Human Rights is one of the most egregious errors or cheats that I have ever seen. Having personally witnessed the brutal, cruel and purposeful torture, beatings, and extermination of many members of the Saharawi population by Moroccan secret service by order of the king, this horrible move by the UN is surely an indication of the corruption within your ranks.
With such a wasted opportunity to direct the world in a cooperative effort toward peace, my previous faith in the UN has crumbled.
May this horrendous decision be a clear indication of the change that is required within your ranks to set a new tone for world cooperation rather than the international bullying that was certainly required to put Morocco (with multiple and long standing human rights abuses documented and substantiated) at the helm of UN Human Rights.
Shame on you.
Last year, World BEYOND War gave its Individual War Abolisher Award to someone struggling for human rights in Western Sahara.
