Ontario Teachers Are Seeking to Divest Their Pension Plan from Weapons Used on Gaza

By World BEYOND War, December 24, 2023

World BEYOND War chapters around the world work for divestment from weapons companies.

Now we’re working with Ontario teachers to put an end to their pension plan’s profiting from Israeli warmaking.

The companies arming Israel that the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan is invested in include the following:

General Electric: The world’s 25th largest weapon manufacturer, General Electric manufactures T700 Turboshaft engines for Boeing’s Apache helicopters which are currently being used to fire missiles on Gaza.

Honeywell: Has provided jet engines and related services to Israel’s Ministry of Defense, including to trainer fighter jet planes. In 2012, Honeywell announced a joint venture with Elbit Systems Ltd. and Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) to supply $735 million worth of jet engines. In 2016 IAI and Honeywell committed to jointly develop a sense-and-avoid (SAA) capability for IAI’s Heron family of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS).

Lockheed Martin: The world’s largest weapon manufacturer, Lockheed Martin supplies Israel with F-16 and F-35 fighter jets, which Israel has been using extensively to bomb Gaza. Lockheed manufactures AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, one of the main weapon types used in aerial attacks on Gaza. On Dec. 11, the Israeli Air Force used a Lockheed Martin C-130-J Super Hercules aircraft to drop approximately seven tons of equipment to Israeli soldiers engaging in ground attacks in Khan Younis. On Nov. 9, a Lockheed Martin–made Hellfire R9X Israeli missile hit journalists sitting near Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

L3 Harris: The world’s ninth largest weapon manufacturer, L3Harris’ components are integrated into multiple weapon systems used by the Israeli military in Gaza, including Boeing’s JDAM kits, Lockheed Martin’s F-35 warplane, Northrop Grumman’s Sa’ar 5 warships, ThyssenKrupp’s Sa’ar 6 warships, and Israel’s Merkava battle tanks.

Northrop Grumman: The world’s sixth largest weapon manufacturer, Northrop Grumman supplies the Israeli Air Force with the Longbow missile delivery system for its Apache attack helicopters and laser weapon delivery systems for its fighter jets. It has also supplied the Israeli Navy with Sa’ar 5 warships, which have participated in the assault on Gaza.

  1. I do not want my pension dollars investment in companies that provide elements of armaments. This is contrary to our commitments as educators.

  2. Teachers across Canada should check their pension plans to end their pension plan’s investment in all companies invested in arming all countries at war.

  3. As a former member of the board of Directors of OTPPB, representIng OTF, I concur with your goal. It is more than time for profit to taken second place to genocide and other crimes against humanity.

  4. I am an Ontario teacher and I unequivocally call for an end to any investment in weapons manufacturing. The idea that I have unwittingly been party to the killing of Palestinians shakes me to my very core. We need to divest now and forever.

  5. Any war is horrible but worse is the genocide occurring right now under our eyes and coming from the Israeli zionists against the Gaza Strip and the West Bank
