On this edition of 1+1 @Yourismouter I had the honor to speak to our returning champion David Swanson, the executive director of World Beyond War the host of the current affairs and history program Talk World Radio which one can listen to on Pacifica Radio Network and David’s own youtube channel, and part of Roots Action . Org and the author of several books including Leaving World War II Behind, When the World Outlawed War, War No More: The Case for Abolition, War Is Never Just, War is a Lie, Killing is not a way of life, and his recent “The Monroe Doctrine at 200 and What to Replace it With”. On the program David talks to us about the persecution of a Ukrainian Peace Activist Yurii Sheilazhenko who is part of the Ukrainian Pacificist Movement. He is under semi-house arrest and is being persecuted by the Ukrainian government THEY CLAIM because he’s spreading Russian disinformation, even though Yurii is opposed to the action of Russian government but also that of the Ukranian one. David gives us a brief update and encourages the audience to sign a petition demanding the Zelensky government end its prosecution against Yurii. David also responds to my question on the coverage of the Ukarine-Russia-NATO war and “whose winning” as corporate media outlets claim Ukraine is winning while left leaning/Anti-imperialist outlets claim its Russia winning. David’s response is interesting. We also talk about David’s book “Leaving World War II Behind”, why the Spanish Civil War and the US and its allies defacto support for Franco’s Fascist forces backed by Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy wasn’t included in his book when talking about Western government and big briskness and reactionary movement like the Eugenics movement that backed and inspired the Nazi movement. And why wasn’t Israel’s weaponizing of “The Holocaust” and other past grievances of Jewish people, as that state’s carte blanche to dispossess the Palestinian Arabic people from their ancestral homeland and brutally occupy/subjugate them, why wasn’t that included in his book about the need to move beyond World War II? David and I also discussed how farcical and bizarre it is that when kids are toddlers or teenagers or even young adults going to school, are taught to not gossip, bully, settle disputes using violence, and yet our wider society allows an institution like war or the kind of aggressive bully/gossip culture of trash tabloids. And my final questions to David are how do we build a world with no war, is it possible to achieve this in international affairs, and what is it going to take for the anti-war movement, the peace movement, racial/social/eco-justice movements, the worker’s rights movement, and the broad left/people power movements to show more urgent solidarity to the plight of Native Americans, Indigenous Hawaiians, and Indigenous Alaskans?
