During the week culminating on September 21, 2024 with the celebration of the International Peace Day, African chapters called for peace in Africa and the world through various actions.
Earlier this week, Mali’s capital, Bamako, was the target of a deadly attack by jihadists. The coordinator of the Malian chapter of World BEYOND War (WBW) condemned this attack and took the opportunity to call for vigilance from Malians, as this conflict is “a new form of colonization imposed indirectly by the West to keep the war machine running and satisfy the hostile interests of our former colonizers “. She reiterated her commitment to advocate for non-violent solutions and the end of the global war system.
The coordinator of the Togo chapter organized two activities, on the culture of peace and the mobilization of members for the smooth running of the chapter. The first activity brought together the children who committed to peace, dialogue, non-violence, and reflected on what they can do to spread peace. The second brought together members for an exchange on the theme “PEACE IN ONESELF! NO TO WAR”. On the same occasion, the chapter held its general assembly.
In Cameroon, the commemoration of the International Day of Peace was done through a march for peace, in the locality of Ndom, Littoral region. The march was initiated by WILPF Cameroon and its partner organizations including the Cameroonian chapter of WBW, as part of the Women’s Call for Peace Week series of activities. In addition to this march, sports activities and trainings were held in other localities in the country.
The Senegal Chapter organized a special webinar on the theme “Promoting the Culture of Peace through Youth”, with youth being at the heart of change and playing a key role in building a peaceful future. Participants followed inspiring experiences of young activists, engaged through successful actions in promoting peace in their communities and beyond. The webinar explored innovative strategies to involve young people in peacebuilding, the importance of youth leadership in conflict prevention, how to transform global challenges into local opportunities for peace.
September 21 was also the first anniversary of the chapter, as it was launched last year during the International Peace Day in Ziguinchor, September 21, 2023.
The coordinator of the Gambia chapter gave an interview to Paradise Radio Soninkara on the participation of young people in nation building. In particular, he exalted the potential of Gambian youth and their willingness to face the multiple challenges to make their voices heard and participate in peace processes.
Journée internationale de la paix 2024 : Créer une culture de la paix
Pendant la semaine ayant culminé le 21 septembre 2024 par la célébration de la journée internationale de la paix, les chapitres africains ont appelé à la paix en Afrique et dans le monde à travers diverses actions.
En début de semaine, la capitale du Mali, Bamako, a fait l’objet d’une attaque meurtrière des djihadistes. La coordonnatrice du chapitre malien de World BEYOND War (WBW) a condamné cette attaque et saisi l’occasion pour appeler à la vigilance des malien, car ce conflit est « une nouvelle forme de colonisation imposée par l’Occident de façon indirecte pour maintenir le fonctionnement de la machine de guerre et satisfaire leur intérêt hostile de nos anciens colonisateurs ». Elle a réitéré son engagement à faire du plaidoyer pour les solutions non violentes et la fin du système guerrier global.
La coordonnatrice du chapitre du Togo a organisé deux activités, sur la culture de la paix et la mobilisation des membres pour une bonne marche du chapitre. La première activité a regroupé les enfants qui se sont engagés pour la paix, le dialogue, la non-violence, et ont réfléchi à ce qu’ils peuvent faire pour propager la paix. La deuxième a réuni les membres pour un échange sur le thème « PAIX EN SOI ! NON A LA GUERRE ». Par cette même occasion, le chapitre a tenu son assemblée générale.
Au Cameroun, la commémoration de la Journée internationale de la Paix s’est faite à travers une marche pour la paix, dans la localité de Ndom, région du Littoral. La marche a été initiée par WILPF Cameroon et ses organisations partenaires dont le chapitre camerounais de WBW, dans le cadre de la série d’activités de la Semaine d’appel à la paix par les femmes. En plus de cette marche, des activités sportives et des formations ont eu lieu dans d’autres localités du pays.
Le chapitre du Sénégal a organisé un webinaire spécial sur le thème « Promouvoir la culture de la paix par la jeunesse », la jeunesse étant au cœur du changement et jouant un rôle clé dans la construction d’un avenir pacifique. Les participants ont suivi des expériences motivantes des jeunes activistes, engagés par des actions à succès dans la promotion de la paix dans leurs communautés et au-delà. Le webinaire a permis d’explorer les stratégies innovantes pour impliquer les jeunes dans la consolidation de la paix, l’importance du leadership jeune dans la prévention des conflits, comment transformer les défis globaux en opportunités locales pour la paix.
Le 21 septembre était également le premier anniversaire du chapitre, car il a été lancé l’an passé pendant la Journée internationale de la Paix à Ziguinchor, le 21 septembre 2023.
Le coordonnateur du chapitre de Gambie a donné une interview à la Paradise Radio Soninkara sur la participation des jeunes à la construction de la nation. Il a notamment exalté le potentiel des jeunes gambiens et leur volonté de faire face aux multiples défis pour faire entendre leur voix et participer aux processus de paix.
