Coalition calls for cancellation of CANSEC, citing public health threat

In anticipation of the Canadian Association of Defence and Security Industries’ announcement on April 1 on the status of CANSEC, a coalition of Canadian and international organizations led by World BEYOND War, the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, Canadian Voice of Women for Peace, Peace Brigades International-Canada, Nobel Women’s Initiative, Conscience Canada, Canadian Peace Initiative, Peace and Social Concerns – Ottawa Quakers, Peace Magazine, Pax Christi Toronto, Vancouver Peace Poppies, DIGILEAK Canada, and the Center for Doukhobor Studies issued the following statement:

It is ludicrous that, amidst a global pandemic, CADSI has not yet cancelled CANSEC, North America’s largest weapons show scheduled in Ottawa for May 27-28. Expected to attract 12,000 government and military officials and weapons industry representatives from 55 countries, CANSEC in and of itself poses a public health threat, not to mention that the weapons it markets endanger all people and the planet. It would be, quite literally, deadly for CANSEC to go on.

On March 23, United Nations Secretary General Guterres called for “an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world…The fury of the virus illustrates the folly of war. Silence the guns; stop the artillery; end the airstrikes.” And yet, despite shortages of ventilators, masks, and other essential medical equipment, with the world on lockdown, and over half a million cases of coronavirus, arms manufacturing continues in factories around the world, including in countries hit hard by the pandemic, such as the U.S. and Italy. Unbelievably, CADSI claims it is in communication with the Canadian government to affirm the weapons industry as an “essential” business that must go on, amidst the pandemic.

Last year, the Government of Canada spent $31.7 billion on the military, putting it at 14th highest in the world according to the Public Accounts of Canada. Plus, Canada plans to buy a new fleet of fighter jets for $19 billion and a fleet of warships for $70 billion. Military spending, which totals over $2 trillion a year globally, should be rapidly redirected to vital human needs and arms factories converted to produce badly needed medical equipment. Planned defence procurement must be cancelled, along with CANSEC, and resources instead must be invested in recovering and rebuilding from the coronavirus pandemic.

The UN Secretary General’s call for a global ceasefire must be extended to stop war production and to cancel the arms shows where weapons are marketed and sold. If CADSI will not budge, Prime Minister Trudeau and Ottawa Mayor Watson must intervene to shut down CANSEC now.

En prévision de l’annonce de l’Association des industries canadiennes de défense et de sécurité (l’AICDS) qui sera publiée le 1er avril sur le statut de CANSEC, une coalition d’organisations canadiennes et internationales, qui est dirigée par World BEYOND War et qui comprend le Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, Canadian Voice of Women for Peace, Peace Brigades International-Canada, Nobel Women’s Initiative, Conscience Canada, Canadian Peace Initiative, Peace Magazine, Pax Christi Toronto, Vancouver Peace Poppies, DIGILEAK Canada, le Peace and Social Concerns – Ottawa Quakers et le Center for Doukhobor Studies, ont publié la déclaration suivante :

Il est ridicule que, au milieu d’une pandémie mondiale, l’AICDS n’ait pas encore annulé CANSEC, la plus grande exposition de l’armement en Amérique du Nord prévu à Ottawa du 27 au 28 mai. Devant attirer 12 000 responsables militaires et gouvernementaux et représentants de l’industrie des armes venant de 55 pays, CANSEC constitue en soi une menace pour la santé publique, sans compter que les armes qu’il commercialise mettent en danger tous les peuples et la planète. Ce serait, littéralement, mortel pour que CANSEC ait lieu.

Le 23 mars, le Secrétaire général des Nations unies, M. Guterres, a appelé à « un cessez-le-feu mondial immédiat dans tous les coins du monde … La fureur du virus illustre la folie de la guerre. Faites taire les canons ; arrêtez l’artillerie ; mettez fin aux frappes aériennes ». Et pourtant, malgré la pénurie de respirateurs, de masques et d’autres équipements médicaux essentiels, le monde étant verrouillé et plus d’un demi-million de cas de coronavirus, la fabrication d’armes se poursuit dans les usines du monde entier, y compris dans les pays durement touchés par la pandémie, tels comme les États-Unis et l’Italie. Incroyablement, l’AICDS prétend être en communication avec le gouvernement canadien pour affirmer que l’industrie des armes est une entreprise « essentielle » qui doit continuer, au milieu de la pandémie.

L’an dernier, le gouvernement du Canada a dépensé 31,7 milliards de dollars pour l’armée, ce qui le place au 14e rang mondial selon les Comptes publics du Canada. De plus, le Canada prévoit acheter une nouvelle flotte d’avions de chasse pour 19 milliards de dollars et une flotte de navires de guerre pour 70 milliards de dollars. Les dépenses militaires, qui s’élèvent plus de 2 000 milliards de dollars par an dans le monde, devraient être rapidement réorientées vers les besoins humains vitaux et les usines d’armement devraient être converties pour produire du matériel médical dont on a grand besoin. L’approvisionnement planifié pour la défense doit être annulé, de même que CANSEC, et les ressources doivent plutôt être investies dans la récupération et la reconstruction après la pandémie de coronavirus.

L’appel du Secrétaire général de l’ONU à un cessez-le-feu mondial doit être prolongé pour arrêter la production de guerre et pour annuler les expositions de l’armement, comme CANSEC, où les armes sont commercialisées et vendues. Si l’AICDS ne bouge pas, le premier ministre Trudeau et le maire d’Ottawa Watson doivent intervenir pour fermer CANSEC maintenant.
