World BEYOND War works to close all foreign military bases. The U.S. military base presence in Italy has a long history, with bases dating from WWII and recently much expanded. Popular movements have won over local governments to demand the closure of bases or to deny the construction of new bases, but the national government has enforced the will of its bosses in Washington, D.C. As elsewhere around the world, U.S. troops commit crimes with impunity in Italy.
