Close Bases in the Philippines

World BEYOND War works to close all foreign military bases. The U.S. military base presence in the Philippines has a long history. including eviction by popular demand, followed by an insidious re-entrance. In 1983-86 the Philippines “people power” movement brought down the oppressive Marcos dictatorship. In 1991, the Philippines ordered U.S. troops out. But the troops (and dictatorship) would return — as would resistance to them. The U.S. government now treats the Philippines as the “front line” in a threatened war with China. As elsewhere in the world, U.S. bases destroy the natural environment in the Philippines. As elsewhere in the world, U.S. base personnel commit terrible crimes with impunity.
