We’re kicking off the new year on the World BEYOND War podcast by welcoming peace studies professor and writer Dr. Oseremen Irene, the newest member of our organization’s board of directors. Oseremen Irene is a writer and Lecturer at the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Nigeria.
This interview was my own first opportunity to get to know Ose Irene, and it didn’t take long before we found lots of common ground as we talked about resource-based and structural or systemic violence, Africa’s historic “Dutch disease” (oil wealth), wealth inequality and the disappearance of the middle class in both Nigeria and USA, student enrollments in private and public universities, proxy wars and civil wars, perceptions of global power struggles and the importance of teaching resilience to young peacebuilders.
My favorite part of this freewheeling and spontaneous conversation was the very end when Ose invented an original song that gave us this episode’s title. As the people of the world endure another month of injury and predation from the wealthy global powers that claim the right to control us, I’m really happy that this podcast series gives me a chance to break through the global hostility and find a new colleague, and make a new friend, halfway across the world.
