About Our Chapter / Notre Chapitre
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is located in the center of Africa with an area of 2.345410 million km² with an estimated population of 102 million inhabitants and has 26 provinces within it. The county has now been going through a period of major conflicts and civil wars for more than two decades, causing several consequences, among others, violence and loss of human lives, lack of respect for human dignity, illicit circulation of weapons, poverty, hunger, and displacement of the population both external and internal including lack of jobs.
To contribute to the efforts of peace consolidation, a chapter of World BEYOND War has been established in the Province of South Kivu. The members of the chapter collaborate with the members of the Peace Organization for Development Opportunities (OPOD/asbl) to promote peace efforts, human rights, non-violence, integral development of men, women and children, as well as peaceful cohabitation of individuals and communities.
The objective of the South Kivu chapter is to promote a culture of peace, non-violence and peaceful cohabitation of all Congolese social layers with the aim of contributing to a just and lasting peace, based on unity and respect for human dignity.
The chapter’s focus is:
• Promote positive social values through the teachings of Peace, Non-violence, Peaceful cohabitation, Civic education;
• Provide humanitarian assistance to the most vulnerable people and groups;
• Promote development initiatives from grassroots communities campaigning against war, poverty and hunger;
• Form networks with local, national, regional and international organizations having the same objectives with the aim of working together to promote the culture of peace and non-violence.
