WBW in Madison, Wisconsin, Says No to Nuclear War Preparations

Why Celebrate Nuclear Submarines? We Reject Preparations for Nuclear War!

On Wednesday morning, a ceremony was held inside the Wisconsin Veterans Museum to celebrate the start of construction by war profiteer General Dynamics Electric Boat of a nuclear submarine called the USS Wisconsin. Madison for a World BEYOND War and Physicians for Social Responsibility joined together in picketing and speaking against this agenda and in support of abolishing war.

Amy Schulz, RN, President of Physicians for Social Responsibility-Wisconsin, and Janet Parker, Chapter Co-coordinator of Madison for a World BEYOND War, spoke at the picketline. They challenged the idea that we should celebrate nuclear weapons and preparations for nuclear war. The speakers explained why the U.S. government should invest tax money in international diplomacy and urgent human needs, rather than colossally expensive and terribly dangerous weapons of war like the USS Wisconsin nuclear submarine. Three percent of U.S. military spending could end starvation on earth. A tiny fraction of the U.S. military budget could pay for Medicare for all U.S. residents.

At Wednesday’s event, citizens challenged the lie that nuclear submarines and nuclear weapons make us safe. The opposite is true. Nuclear weapons are an enormous and constant danger to humans and all life on the planet.

On Thursday, August 28, WBW’s Anti-War Film Series will present “War Made Easy: How Presidents & Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death” at Madison’s Central Library at 6:00 pm. There will be a zoom discussion with eminent anti-nuclear activist Norman Solomon after the film. Details here.

Earlier this month, Physicians for Social Responsibility – Wisconsin and Madison for a World BEYOND War hosted Lanterns for Peace, an event at Tenney Park marking 80 years since the nuclear bombing by the US of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It’s estimated that 100,000 people were killed by the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, and 70,000 people by the nuclear bombing of Nagasaki. We say Never Again to nuclear war and preparations for it.

Guided by the values and expertise of medicine and public health, Physicians, Health Professionals, and Concerned Citizens for Social Responsibility (PSR) Wisconsin works to protect all life from the devastation of nuclear weapons, climate change and environmental contamination.
