Who is Stealing Moldova’s Future?

By Pacifist Barricade, October 30, 2024

On October 20, 2025, Moldovans were called to the polls to decide whether they supported a constitutional amendment aimed at incorporating European integration into the country’s fundamental legislative text. To the surprise of many, the outcome was razor-thin, with just a few thousand votes separating the “yes” and “no” options in the referendum. Concurrently, presidential elections were taking place, with current President Maia Sandu seeking re-election. Political commentators speculate that she orchestrated the pro-EU referendum to position herself as the sole leader capable of steering the nation toward Europe. However, as noted, the narrow result raises numerous questions. Russia, often portrayed as the perennial adversary, is being blamed for this slim victory. Is external interference solely responsible for the lackluster results? To delve deeper into this referendum and Moldova’s current challenges, we invited activist and commentator Vitalie Sprânceană, founder of the Plazforma website, to share his insights.
