The Canadian government just announced that it intends to spend $2.49 billion on its first fleet of armed military drones, a fleet of MQ-9 Reapers.
This week, after Parliament adjourned for the holiday season, the Canadian government quietly released plans to purchase its first fleet of military armed drones for both domestic surveillance and attacks overseas. Government officials are clearly hoping we won’t notice their sneaky announcement.
Canada is already selling drone parts to Israel, including the engines for the IDF’s Heron TP (Eitan) combat drones currently used in Gaza. The last thing we need is for the Canadian military to begin purchasing its own fleet of armed drones to wreak terror around the world.

Remember when Canada used to stand for peace? Lester Pearson was a hero, a role model for us. We were respected in the world as Peace Keepers.
The skies were not a place of fear, but this can happen with the presence of drones, our privacy is lost. This is bad enough, but armed drones are a very real oppressive threat. It has been known that any group (eg. people celebrating a wedding or a birthday, or a funeral) could be mistaken for a “terrorist group”, or some form of national threat. The drone’s operator is in a position to make a snap decision that could be tragic or fatal. This is a threat I absolutely oppose. Our tax money should be spent on bringing peace, nor arming for nameless threats.
Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance?
For what? On ordinary Canadians? On supposed enemies that we don’t have? Yet?
This is a draconian measure that can easily be used mistakenly or abusively. It is wasteful and unnecessary. Our government should be spending our tax dollars towards true beneficial objectives instead of killer drones and F-35 war jets. Canada does not need to be following harsh USA measures for “security”.
