Dear United Nations Organizations
We, the undersigned organizations and individuals, support the Global Days of Action against Military Spending promoted by the International Peace Bureau (IPB) and various sister organizations around the world. Therefore, we would like to point out the following:
1.- We express our rejection of the continuous military spending by our governments, which is detrimental to our entire population and the need for more economic resources to address poverty and satisfy our rights to decent work, timely health care, quality education and access to housing, among many other rights that cannot be satisfied by our States.
Presidents of Latin America, the Caribbean and North America2 – According to information from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), military spending in 2024 represented an “unprecedented increase in global military spending driven by Europe and the Middle East” and “reached $2,718 billion in 2024, representing an increase of 9.4% in real terms over 2023, the sharpest annual increase since at least the end of the Cold War”.
According to the SIPRI report, in our continent, in Central America military spending reached 19.8 billion dollars, with Mexico being the country that spent the most with 16.7 billion dollars in the area of “defense”.
In South America, military spending amounted to 53.6 billion dollars, with Brazil being the country with the highest expenditure with 20.947 billion dollars; followed by Colombia, with 15.096; Chile, with 5105; Argentina, with 4.177; Ecuador, with 2.698; and Peru with 2.565.
In North America, the United States was the country with the highest military expenditure in the region and worldwide, reaching 997,309 million dollars; and Canada, with 29,346 million dollars.
3. – In contrast to military spending, poverty persists in many of our countries. According to a report by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) 2024, “there are still 172 million people living in poverty in the region and 66 million do not have sufficient income to access a basic food basket”. The situation is critical in many countries where children are also affected. We recall the very heartfelt graffiti: “Military budgets for schools and hospitals”.
4 – We express our concern and rejection of the arms escalation that we are currently seeing throughout Europe; we reject the shipment of weapons from the United States and other NATO countries to Israel, which continue to be used to murder the Palestinian population; we reject the threats and renewed military intervention by the United States in Panama; we call for a redoubling of efforts so that through peace negotiations we can put an end to the war against Palestine, between Ukraine and Russia, in Yemen, in Sudan, among many other conflicts that are still ongoing.
5 – We urge our countries of the region and the world to stop military spending and work on an agenda of disarmament and peace, strengthening relations of friendship, trust, in the construction of a common security, where respect for the self-determination of every nation in the world is guaranteed, and an end to threats and war is put an end to. “Respect for the rights of others is peace”.
6 – We call on the United Nations (UN) to lead with greater ownership and redouble efforts to build a safer world, for disarmament, for the prohibition of nuclear testing, and to ensure that the powers reduce and eliminate their nuclear weapons. It is urgent to work so that we all live in a world where peace and friendship among all peoples prevail.
No Más Gasto Militar En América Latina

Las organizaciones y personas firmantes apoyamos los Días de Acción Global contra el Gasto Militar que impulsa la Oficina Internacional por la Paz (IPB) y diversas organizaciones hermanas en todo el mundo. Por lo anterior, queremos señalar lo siguiente:
1.- Manifestamos nuestro rechazó al continuo gasto militar que realizan nuestros gobiernos y que va en desmedro de toda nuestra población y de la necesidad que se dispongan de más recursos económicos para enfrentar la pobreza y satisfacer nuestros derechos a un trabajo digno, a una atención de salud oportuna, a una educación de calidad, como al acceso a una vivienda, entre tantos otros derechos que no pueden ser satisfechos a nuestros pueblos por nuestros Estados.
2 – De acuerdo a información del Instituto Internacional de Investigación para la Paz de Estocolmo (SIPRI) el gasto militar del periodo 2024 representó un “Aumento sin precedentes del gasto militar mundial impulsado por Europa y Oriente Medio” y “alcanzó los 2.718 mil millones de dólares en 2024, lo que representa un incremento del 9,4 % en términos reales respecto a 2023, el aumento anual más pronunciado desde, al menos, el final de la Guerra Fría”.
De acuerdo al informe de SIPRI, en nuestro continente, en América Central el gasto militar alcanzó los 19.800 millones, siendo México el país qué más gastó con 16.700 millones de dólares en el área de “defensa”.
En Suramérica, el gasto militar ascendió a 53.600 millones de dólares siendo Brasil el país con el mayor gasto con 20.947 millones de dólares; seguido por Colombia, con 15.096; por Chile, con 5105; por Argentina, con 4.177; por Ecuador, con 2.698; y por Perú con 2.565.
En América del norte, Estados Unidos fue el país que el mayor gasto militar en la región y en todo el mundo, llegando a 997.309 millones de dólares; y Canadá, con 29.346 millones de dólares.
3. – En contraste al gasto militar, la pobreza se mantiene en muchos de nuestros países. De acuerdo a un informe de la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL) 2024, “todavía hay 172 millones de personas en situación de pobreza en la región y 66 millones no cuentan con los ingresos suficientes para acceder a una canasta básica de alimentos”. La situación es crítica en muchos países donde se ven afectados también niñas y niños. Recordamos el graffiti muy sentido: “Presupuestos militares, para escuelas y hospitales”
4 – Manifestamos nuestra preocupación y rechazo a la escalada armamentistas que vemos actualmente en toda Europa; rechazamos el envío de armas de EEUU y de otros países de la OTAN a Israel, las que siguen siendo utilizadas para asesinar a la población palestina; rechazamos las amenazas y nuevamente intervención militar de EEUU en Panamá; llamamos a redoblar los esfuerzos para que mediante negociaciones de paz se pueda poner fin a la guerra contra Palestina, entre Ucrania y Rusia, en Yemen, en Sudán, entre otros tantos conflictos que siguen en curso.
5 – Exhortamos a nuestros países de la región y del mundo a frenar el gasto militar y trabajar en una agenda de desarme y de paz fortaleciendo las relaciones de amistad, de confianza, en la construcción de una seguridad común, donde se garantice el respeto a la autodeterminación de cada nación del mundo, y se ponga fin a las amenazas y la guerra. “El respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz”.
6 – Llamamos a la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) a liderar con más propiedad y redoblar los esfuerzos para la construcción de un mundo más seguro, por el desarme, por la prohibición de ensayos nucleares, como para lograr que las potencias reduzcan y eliminen sus armas nucleares. Es urgente trabajar para que todas y todos vivamos en un mundo donde impere la paz y la amistad entre todos los pueblos.
