About Our Chapter
Somalia is located in the Horn of Africa and has one of the longest coastlines on the continent, giving it significant strategic importance for regional maritime trade. Despite decades of conflict and instability, the country continues to demonstrate remarkable resilience, with communities actively working toward peacebuilding, development, and national reconstruction.
The World BEYOND War chapter started in Somalia is a grassroots peacebuilding initiative based in Puntland, dedicated to promoting nonviolence, empowering young people, and addressing piracy and the root causes of conflict. Working in partnership with local communities, civil society actors, and traditional leaders, the chapter seeks to strengthen social cohesion, prevent violent extremism, and create sustainable opportunities for youth through peace education, dialogue, and skills development. The chapter contributes to building a more peaceful, just, and resilient Somalia.
Activities
To achieve its objectives, the chapter plans to establish Youth Peace Clubs, organize community peace forums and dialogue sessions, and conduct public awareness campaigns promoting nonviolent conflict resolution. It will also support vocational and livelihood training programs. Additional activities will include mentorship programs for at-risk youth, peacebuilding initiatives in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, inter-clan reconciliation efforts, and collaboration with community leaders to strengthen local early-warning and conflict prevention mechanisms.
