Hideki Yoshikawa is a member of World BEYOND War’s Advisory Board. He isthe Director of the Okinawa Environmental Justice Project and the International Director of the Save the Dugong Campaign Center in Japan. He serves on the Species Survival Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). He also teaches anthropology as an adjunct lecturer at the University of the Ryukyus and the Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts. As an Okinawan activist, he brings to World BEYOND War a critical perspective and experience grounded in recognizing the links among the environment, peace, and human rights. Over the past 20 years, he has worked to protect Okinawa’s natural environment and people’s lives from the overwhelming presence of U.S. military bases and training on the islands. He has collaborated extensively with civil society groups, drawing on frameworks such as IUCN, the UNESCO World Heritage Convention, the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the U.N. Human Rights Council.
