U.S. House of Representatives Creates Requirement That There Be Some Basis for Any Foreign Bases
By a vote of 219 to 210, at 2:31 p.m. on Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an amendment introduced by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar requiring that the U.S. military provide Congress with the cost and the supposed national security benefits of every foreign military base or foreign military operation. New Video of Divestment Webinar
On Tuesday, July 2, 2019, World BEYOND War hosted a webinar on divestment, featuring David Swanson of World BEYOND War, Maya Rommwatt of CODEPINK, and Susi Snyder of PAX/Don’t Bank on the Bomb. On this webinar, we talk about different divestment models, and the strategies and tactics needed to run a successful divestment campaign. Watch the video.

New Fact Sheet Series!
We’re excited to announce our new fact sheet series outlining the reasons why we should abolish war. The fact sheets are designed as printable handouts that can be used for tabling events, grassroots lobbying meetings, and much more. Each one contains a list of references, so you can learn more about any of the details mentioned. We believe that education is a critical component of a global security system, and an essential tool for getting us there. Our educational resources are based on knowledge and research that expose the myths of war and illuminate the proven, nonviolent, peaceful alternatives that can bring us authentic security.

Philly Takes Action!
On June 26, World BEYOND War and the Divest Philly from the War Machine Coalition hosted a book talk event with author Roy Eidelson about his book, Political Mind Games: How the 1% Manipulate Our Understanding of What’s Happening, What’s Right, and What’s Possible. Using examples of militarism, climate change, and more, Roy explained how we can recognize – and counter – the manipulative appeals that the 1% use to advance their self-serving agenda. Roy’s talk was followed by a strategy meeting to discuss the newly forming Divest Philly from the War Machine Coalition, a network of groups working to divest public and private funds in Philly from weapons manufacturers, military contractors, and war profiteers. Thanks to Wooden Shoe Books for hosting the event!

Volunteer Spotlight: Bob

How did you get involved with World BEYOND War (WBW)?

I came across World BEYOND War some years ago in scanning the Internet for volunteer editing or writing opportunities with peace groups. That discovery led me to read several books by David Swanson, as well as A Global Security System: An Alternative to War from cover to cover. I also completed a WBW online course in peace-building.

What keeps you inspired/motivated to advocate for change?

As long as the military-industrial-MSM complex determines U.S. foreign policy, the only decent course possible is to advocate for changing our present world to one that puts compassion ahead of power, cooperation ahead of conflict, and love ahead of fear. The best start on that course may also be its signal end: a World BEYOND War.
