A nation’s budget is a reflection of its government’s values. How we spend money says a lot about our nation’s priorities, and it is vital to securing our future and our children’s future.
We deserve a budget that not just keeps us safe and secure but also provides opportunities, creates jobs, rebuilds our infrastructure, provides affordable healthcare, housing and quality education, protects the environment and the vital social safety net that enables the most vulnerable and needy to have a life of dignity and security.
To the contrary, the budget that Donald Trump has proposed for 2018 will outright eliminate 19 government agencies, including the National Endowment for the Arts; the National Endowment for the Humanities; the Legal Services Corporation, which provides legal services for the poor; the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; AmeriCorps; and the Chemical Safety Board, which investigates industrial disasters in chemical production and transport, including oil-well blowouts like the 2010 disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Destroying all these agencies saves only $3 billion — less than the cost of US military aid to Israel alone.
In the name of “national security”, the Trump budget actually undermines the welfare and security of working people and the poor.
