By Global Solidarity for Peace in Palestine, December 13, 2024
A network of over 100 international peace organizations, Global Solidarity for Peace in Palestine (GSPP), has delivered a letter to His Excellency Mr. Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the UN (PDF), and to His Excellency Mr. Philemon Yang, President of the UN General Assembly (PDF), urging actions in support of Resolution A/ES-10/L.31/Rev.1. This resolution calls for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
Signers to the letter urge the General Assembly to demand the complete withdrawal of Israel from the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) and to establish and secure humanitarian aid corridors. In addition, they request consideration of targeted boycotts, sanctions, and divestments, particularly against illegal operations in the OPT, the establishment of an arms embargo on Israel, and exploration of suspending Israel from the General Assembly until it complies with international law.
The GSPP letters come amid increased global scrutiny of Israel’s brazen and continuous violations of the Genocide Convention. On December 4, 2024, Amnesty International released a 300-page report describing Israel’s assaults on Gaza as genocide. Two weeks earlier, the International Criminal Court had announced arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Observing that “Israel has demonstrated its specific intent to physically destroy Palestinians,” Miguel Álvarez Gandara of Serapaz called on all States to use every legal avenue to bring suspected perpetrators to justice. “No one,” said Álvarez, “should be allowed to commit genocide and remain unpunished. We need sustained effort by politically active internationals who insist on compliance with international laws on human rights. We must denounce grave human rights abuses, no matter who commits them.”
The Coalition requests a meeting with the Secretary General to personally deliver its petition.
GSPP is a coalition of organizations from around the world committed to defending the rights of Palestinians and ending the occupation. Our movement is built on the principles of justice, human dignity, and respect for international law.
GSPP is holding an open-to-the-public, online event in support of peace in Palestine on December 15.
