On October 4, groups around the world held a day of education to close bases.

Supporters of the Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign (MHAC) gathered by the main gates of RAF Menwith Hill on Saturday 4th October 2025 afternoon. The label “RAF” is deliberately misleading; it is a U.S. military base. Around the world , other groups also gathered outside foreign military bases to support a global call for these bases to close. The global action was co-ordinated by a dynamic global group called World BEYOND War. There are over a thousand foreign military bases around the world. The existence of foreign military bases raises tensions both locally and in surrounding nations but are rarely accountable to the host nation. Substantial amounts of money are spent on maintaining these bases, which reduces the resources available for sustaining people. The Menwith Hill Accountability Campaign arranges a weekly peaceful presence by the Main Gates of “RAF” Menwith Hill on a Tuesday evening from 6pm to 7.30pm, calling for the activities of the base to be accountable to the UK Government. On October 5th, Montreal for a World BEYOND War hosted an online discussion of the 2004 John Pilger film Stealing a Nation, about a historic injustice: how in the 1960s and 70s the U.K. and the U.S. conspired to kidnap and exile the inhabitants of the Chagos Islands, the largest of which, Diego Garcia, was then made into a U.S. military base. The Chagossians have been trying ever since to return to their homeland. One of the participants was a healthcare worker who had visited the Chagos Islands, and who knew a great deal about the Chagossians’ Right of Return campaign. It was a very productive and synergistic event.
