Forum Friedensethik calls for an end of nuclear sharing

Karlsruhe (epd). One year after the entry into force of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), the Forum for Peace Ethics of the Evangelical Church in Baden is calling for Germany to withdraw from NATO’s nuclear sharing. The so-called nuclear umbrella offers no protection, said the co-founder of the forum, Dirk-Michael Harmsen, in Karlsruhe on Thursday. On the contrary, he said, it would fuel a conflict that was already very dangerous. The Forum Friedensethik demands “an end to the stationing of U.S. nuclear bombs in Germany.”

The Forum for Peace Ethics perceives the current coalition agreement as “contradictory”: on the one hand, the German Government wants to work for a world free of nuclear weapons, but on the other hand it wants to continue nuclear deterrence and sharing. The government wants to attend the First Meeting of States Parties of the TPNW as an observer in Vienna in March, which would show a rapprochement. At the same time, Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht wants to procure new nuclear-capable fighter-bombers. In the opinion of the Forum, this does not add up.

The UN treaty banning nuclear weapons has been in force since Jan. 22, 2021. According to the forum, 59 states are currently party to it, 86 have signed it. In Germany, according to an opinion poll, four out of five people wanted Germany to join. The Forum, founded in 2000, is an association of about 80 people and the partner organization of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).

Forum Friedensethik fordert Ende der nuklearen Teilhabe

Karlsruhe (epd).

Januar 2021 in Kraft.
