Hiroshima Day in Vienna

6 Aug 2017 - 00:00

Vienna, Austria

The Viennese Peace Movement and the Hiroshima Group Vienna joined by affiliated peace organisations call for the 2017 memorial day of the first time atom bombs ever used against human beings.

This year marks the 72nd anniversary of the only time nuclear warheads were employed as an act of aggression at the end of the 2nd world war, the bombings of the Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki executed by the US Air Force on August 6th and August 9th 1945. The consequences of this inferno had been the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and victims suffering from resulting illnesses up today.

It is good news that a majority of more than 130 member-states of the UN had agreed upon a treaty on the ban of Nuclear Weapons on July 7 this year. We consider that a big step forward in our struggle for the abolition of all Nuclear Weapons but nevertheless we have to be clear that achieving our goal, a nuclear weapon’s free world, is still far ahead of us.

We call for the total global elimination of all nuclear weapons. As an important step for total ban of all nuclear weapons we call for a nuclear weapon free zone Europe. We emphasize on Austria’s neutrality and anti nuclear weapons strategy. It is due to the work of peace and environmental activists that a ban on nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants is part of the Austrian Constitution.

This year the peace movements commemorate the victims of the nuclear attacks at The Graben in downtown Vienna. Hiroshima Commemoration starts on Sunday, August 6th 2017 at 6 PM and ends at app. 8:30 PM with a lantern march to the pond in front of Karlskirche. On Wednesday August 9th 2017 at 20:00 PM there is a ceremony on behalf of Nagasaki at the Viennese Peace Pagoda.

Each year we collect messages of support from people with diverse backgrounds – hundreds of voices supporting the struggle against nuclear weapons, against war and against nuclear power plants. Please support this action with your own statement which will be presented to public at The Graben and published on www.hiroshima.at

Please send the statements of support until July 31st 2017 to: pax.vienna@chello.at

We, the Hiroshima Group Vienna, the Viennese Peace Movement and a number of other groups organizing this year’s event want to thank you for supporting our common pursuit of a world free of nuclear weapons, nuclear power plants and war. Please note that with sending your message of support you are also accepting the release of your message in an intended booklet.

In peace and solidarity,

Sonja Jamkojian-Huber, Helga Ungar, Ernst Toman, Alois Reisenbichler
