Anti-Conscription Campaign-"100 Years On" Conference

18 Apr 2018 - 19:00

Dublin 2, Ireland

Peace and Neutrality Alliance | Comhaontas Na Neodrachta Agus Síochána

Anti-Conscription Campaign-100 Year On
Conference in the Mansion House, Dublin
Wednesday 18th April 10.30 – 3pm

War propaganda failed to conceal the horrific slaughter of the First World War, so with declining recruits the British government agreed a Military Service Bill to extend conscription to Ireland.

In 1918 the British Empire needed to replenish its army, but a successful Conference against Conscription was held in the Mansion House, uniting all shades of nationalist and trade union opinion against this proposal. This important event had a major influence on Irish independence and Irish neutrality, so why has it been airbrushed out of our history.

100 years on Ardmhéara Mícheál Mac Donncha, Lord Mayor of Dublin hosts a commemorative Anti-Conscription Conference in the Round Room at the Mansion House on the 18th April 2018. Speakers on the day include Dr Ciarán Wallace, Dr Thomas J. Morrissey SJ, Dr Brian Hanley, Liz Gillis, Dr Micheline Sheehy Skeffington, Francis Devine and Roger Cole of PANA. The Seminar will also include a look at the crisis through song.

Admission is free, and refreshments are included advanced registration is rrequired by email

War propaganda continues today and organisations like the Peace and Neutrality Alliance and indeed those of you who are part of that broad alliance against imperialist wars have been excluded from mainstream media. Over the last few days we have been hearing talk of ‘World War Three’, as war drums beat for military escalation in Syria. PANA opposes this course of action which will only increase the likelihood of this terrible conflict spilling over into the wider Middle East and potentially beyond that. Can we learn from history, can we unite a broad alliance of people opposed to imperialist wars, hope to see you in the Mansion House next Wednesday?

Best Wishes,
