Do Armenians Matter to Western Media?

By World BEYOND War, September 26, 2023

If the people of Armenia were Ukrainian, would we hear more about them?

The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh is dire and calls for immediate assistance and peacemaking. After nine long months of isolation and blockade, approximately 120,000 residents of Artsakh are facing a harrowing struggle for their very survival.

Regrettably, calls for international pressure on Azerbaijan to cease its acts of violence have thus far fallen on deaf ears. Azerbaijan continues to pursue a disturbing agenda aimed at ethnically cleansing the region of its native Armenian population.

The dictator-led Azerbaijani government’s relentless pursuit of ethnic cleansing has left Armenian civilians trapped in a state of desperation, devoid of access to essential necessities such as food and medication. Even the Lachin corridor, the sole lifeline connecting the Republic of Armenia to Artsakh, has been blocked by Azerbaijani troops, obstructing humanitarian assistance efforts, including those of the Red Cross.

The government of Azerbaijan is resolute in its pursuit of an Artsakh devoid of its Armenian inhabitants, and in doing so it has perpetrated heinous crimes that are well-documented by numerous reports.

In particular, we draw your attention to The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention’s comprehensive report, published just prior to the peak of ethnic cleansing, as well as a condensed summary of this report for your reference. These reports outline tragic events involving the deliberate targeting of civilians, including children, the destruction of homes and communities, and the systematic denial of basic human rights.
