As part of the efforts of the global movement World BEYOND War (WBW) to unite different grassroots forces and movements around the world to abolish war and build a just, sustainable, and lasting peace, several movements organized a series of activities in Asturias, Spain, to take advantage of the visit of Gabriel Aguirre, WBW organizer for Latin America.
The activities took place on October 28 and 29 in the cities of Oviedo and Gijon. The first conference was organized at the “La Revoltosa” bookstore, where participants discussed the history of the WBW movement, its mission, vision, current campaigns, and what a chapter is. Those present had the opportunity to hear firsthand about the current situation in Latin America and how this region is confronting the growing process of militarization and maintaining this region as a zone of peace.
Later, in an open space facing the Cantabrian Sea, activists from various parts of Asturias gathered to organize an activity involving origami in the shape of the peace crane, in tribute to the victims of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and as a message that this should never be repeated. The organizer for Latin America participated in this activity and shared a message to continue building a culture of peace through various human activities.
Similarly, a conversation was held in the city of Oviedo at a primary school, with several people interested in hearing WBW’s position on how and why to abolish war. This activity was very motivating because it allowed for the exchange of experiences, and those present expressed their interest in continuing to work with the WBW organization with a view to creating a chapter. At this event, we also took the opportunity to talk about the serious situation in the Caribbean, in light of the current military threats from the United States in the region.
It is worth mentioning that Spain plays a key role in the process of denouncing NATO and the considerable resources that are used to maintain this militaristic alliance, allocating funds that should be used to solve the main problems of our societies.
It is important to note that despite the geographical differences between our peoples, we have much more in common, such as the need to achieve a dignified life through the guarantee of social and economic rights to ensure the well-being of humanity.
Construyendo Paz Desde Asturias

Cómo parte de los esfuerzos del movimiento global World BEYOND War (WBW), por unir las diferentes fuerzas y movimientos de base en el mundo para abolir la guerra y construir una paz justa, sostenible y duradera, varios movimientos organizaron un conjunto de actividades en Asturias-España, para aprovechar la visita de Gabriel Aguirre, organizador para América Latina.
Las actividades tuvieron lugar durante los días 28 y 29 de Octubre, en la localidad de Oviedo y Gijon, cómo parte de este esfuerzo se organizó la primera conferencia en la Librería “La Revoltosa”, en la cual se pudo hablar sobre la historia del movimiento WBW, su misión, visión, actuales campañas en desarrollo, enfoque sobre lo que es un capítulo, durante esta actividad los presentes tuvieron oportunidad de conocer de primera voz la actualidad en América Latina, y cómo esta región hace frente para detener el creciente proceso de militarización y mantener esta región como una zona de paz.
Luego en un espacio abierto frente al mar cantábrico activistas de diversos lugares de Asturias se hicieron presentes para organizar una acción de realizar un origami con el símbolo de la grulla de la Paz, en homenaje a las víctimas de la bomba atómica en Hiroshima y Nagazhaky y cómo un mensaje para no volver a repetir esto nunca más, el organizador para América Latina participó en esta actividad y compartió un mensaje para seguir construyendo una cultura de paz, desde las diversas actividades humanas.
De igual forma se realizó un conservatorio en la ciudad de Oviedo en una escuela primaria, con varias personas interesadas en escuchar la posición de WBW sobre cómo y por que abolir la guerra, esta actividad fue muy motivadora porque permitió intercambiar experiencias y los presentes expresaron su interés de continuar trabajando junto a la organización WBW con la perspectiva de crear un capítulo. En este evento también tomamos la oportunidad para hablar sobre la grave situación en el Caribe, frente a las actuales amenazas militares de EE.UU en el Caribe.
Cabe mencionar que España tiene gran importancia cómo un actor clave en el proceso de denunciar a la OTAN y los cuantiosos recursos que son empleados para mantener esta alianza militarista, destinando estos fondos que deberían ser empleados en resolver los principales problemas de nuestras sociedades.
De esta visita Asturias, es necesario decir, que a pesar de las diferencias geográficas nuestros pueblos guardan muchas cosas más en común, la necesidad de alcanzar una vida digna a través de la garantía de derechos sociales y económicos para asegurar el bienestar de nuestra humanidad.
